Wout van Aert (Visma | Lease a Bike) viel aan op de klim naar het Piazza del Campo in Siena en pakte de zege in etappe 9.

Wat een verschil kan één dag maken voor Wout van Aert in de Giro d’Italia. Na een emotionele overwinning op de gravelrit van zondag, kijkt hij nu al uit naar een mogelijke tweede ritzege in de tijdrit van Lucca naar Pisa op dinsdag.

Toch blijft Van Aert voorzichtig, ondanks zijn comeback na een reeks teleurstellingen. Hij weet dat zijn vorm grillig blijft en dat het even snel weer kan omslaan als het nu goed ging in Siena.

Tijdens een persconferentie op de tweede rustdag vertelde Van Aert hoe zwaar de afgelopen week voor hem was geweest, zeker na het nipt missen van de overwinning op de openingsrit in Tirana. Zijn voorafgaande infectie speelde hem parten tijdens de Albanese Grand Partenza. Zijn magische dag in Toscane had bijna niet plaatsgevonden.

“Mentale omslag”

“Mentale voel ik me nu heel anders. Een week geleden vroeg ik me af of het wel zin had om de Giro voort te zetten,” zei Van Aert maandag.

“Daar hebben we het ook echt over gehad. Na de eerste rustdag kreeg ik het gevoel en de signalen dat het misschien toch kon. Maar rit 4 was echt teleurstellend. Ik was moe en had slechte benen, terwijl het eigenlijk een makkelijke rit was.

“Het moest echt keren in de rit naar Matera. En dat gebeurde ook: rit 5 was ‘normaal’ afzien. Het deed niet overal meer pijn. Het was de eerste keer dat ik de finish haalde met een goed gevoel.”

Van Aert wilde nog niet spreken van een volledige terugkeer naar zijn topvorm, maar erkende dat het ook kon liggen aan het feit dat anderen inmiddels ook gewoon meer aan het afzien zijn na een zware Giro-week.

“Groei in een Grote Ronde is een mooi gezegde, maar het is moeilijk te zeggen of dat echt zo is, of dat je gewoon minder snel afbreekt dan anderen,” zei hij.

“Ik denk dat ik beter word, maar ik voel me nog niet zo goed dat ik ineens mijn beste benen weer heb.”

Tijdrit als volgende graadmeter

De 28,6 km lange tijdrit moet een nieuwe graadmeter worden voor Van Aert’s herstel. Zijn heroïsche inspanning om zondag niet gelost te worden door Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) heeft hem flink uitgeput.

Met de rustdag op het juiste moment hoopt Van Aert dat het dinsdag beter gaat dan tijdens de tijdrit op dag 2 in Tirana. Daar had hij naar eigen zeggen te diep gegaan in de openingsrit, wat hem in de ITT opbrak.

“De tijdrit is alweer de volgende kans om een mooi resultaat te halen, misschien zelfs nog een etappezege,” zei Van Aert.

“We zullen zien hoe ik hersteld ben. Iedereen heeft natuurlijk een rustdag gehad, maar ik hoef niemand uit te leggen dat ik gisteren heel diep ben gegaan om die rit te winnen. In een grote ronde draait een tijdrit in het tweede deel vaak meer om frisheid dan om pure tijdritcapaciteiten.”

De route loopt zuidwaarts vanuit de ommuurde stad Lucca en is grotendeels vlak, met halverwege een kleine klim. Van Aert noemde het een dag voor de echte tijdritspecialisten en wees ritwinnaar van etappe 2, Josh Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers), aan als topfavoriet.

“In Albanië ging de tijdrit niet zoals ik wilde, maar ik weet denk ik wel waarom. Dinsdag is echt eentje voor de specialisten, heel rechttoe rechtaan. Alleen de start in Lucca is technisch.

“Ik begin zonder twijfels, maar Tarling is de favoriet, deze route ligt hem nog beter. Het wordt moeilijk om hem te kloppen.”

Nieuwe uitrusting en hernieuwd vertrouwen

Van Aert kan vertrouwen putten uit zijn ritzege én volgens Visma ook uit zijn nieuwe Prologo-zadel, dat tijdens de persconferentie werd onthuld.

De druk is er ook wat af, nu hij zijn eerste Giro-zege op zak heeft – het belangrijkste doel dat hij zichzelf had gesteld. Dat zou weleens het geheime recept kunnen zijn voor meer succes in deze ronde.

“Het is altijd fijn om vlak voor de rustdag te winnen, dat geeft je iets meer tijd om ervan te genieten. Dat hebben we zeker gedaan,” zei hij.

“Ik blijf met beide voeten op de grond, maar ik kijk nu met een veel beter gevoel uit naar de rest van de Giro.”
