Brisbane Broncos icon Darren Lockyer has weighed in on the club’s recent turmoil, addressing three hot-button issues: the contentious return of playmaker Ezra Mam, the growing scrutiny around coach Michael Maguire, and the uncertain long-term future of veteran halfback Adam Reynolds.
Mam’s return to the starting lineup has stirred debate across the NRL landscape, with critics questioning both the timing and the decision-making process behind his comeback after weeks sidelined due to disciplinary issues. Lockyer, a former captain and board member, defended the club’s handling of the situation.
“Ezra is a special talent,” Lockyer told Fox League. “Yes, there are off-field expectations that come with wearing the Broncos jersey, but internally, they’ve set standards and Ezra has worked hard to meet them. He deserves a second chance, and I think we’ll see the best of him in the weeks ahead.”
The pressure cooker surrounding coach Michael Maguire has also intensified following a string of disappointing performances, leaving the Broncos outside the top eight. Lockyer acknowledged the frustration from fans but called for patience.
“People forget this is a rebuild phase,” Lockyer said. “Maguire has inherited a squad in transition. Results are part of the job, but we have to look at the bigger picture—bringing through youth and reshaping the culture. The board still backs him.”
Another major talking point is the future of Adam Reynolds. The 34-year-old halfback has been plagued by injury this season, and questions loom over his role in 2026 and beyond.
“Reyno’s experience is invaluable,” Lockyer said. “But father time catches up with everyone. The Broncos need to start grooming a successor, but I’d still back Adam to contribute—whether that’s on the field or mentoring the next generation.”
As the Broncos navigate a pivotal stretch of the season, Lockyer’s comments provide a measured perspective amidst rising noise and expectation. Whether it’s Mam’s redemption arc, Maguire’s stability, or Reynolds’ twilight chapter, Brisbane’s path forward is under intense scrutiny—and still
being written.
