The Duke Blue Devils have struck gold in the transfer portal, securing former Tulane standout Sion James in what could be one of the most impactful pickups of the offseason.
James, a 6-foot-6 guard known for his versatility, defense, and leadership, spent four seasons at Tulane, where he developed into one of the most well-rounded players in the American Athletic Conference. Now, he’s set to bring his experience and two-way play to Cameron Indoor Stadium, giving head coach Jon Scheyer a major boost heading into next season.
Why This is a Huge Win for Duke
Duke’s roster was already shaping up as one of the nation’s best, but adding a player like James elevates them even further. Unlike some transfer targets who specialize in scoring, James is a Swiss Army knife—capable of locking down the opposing team’s best player, making smart plays, and providing secondary ball-handling.
Last season at Tulane, James averaged 10.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.7 steals per game while shooting an efficient 49% from the field. His defensive presence was undeniable, as he routinely guarded multiple positions, showcasing the kind of versatility that Duke loves in its perimeter players.
Filling a Key Need
Duke saw a few key departures this offseason, and while the team boasts top-tier freshmen and returning talent, James fills a specific void. His experience, size, and defensive mindset make him a perfect fit alongside Duke’s young stars.
Scheyer has emphasized positionless basketball, and James’ ability to play and defend multiple spots makes him an ideal piece in that system. Whether he’s playing alongside a dynamic backcourt or stepping in as a small-ball forward, James provides Duke with reliability and veteran leadership—two things that can’t be overstated in the high-stakes world of college basketball.
A Championship Move?
With Duke already projected to be a Final Four contender, adding James only strengthens their case. He might not be a flashy scorer like some of Duke’s recent recruits, but his impact will be felt across the board—especially in big moments.
