Jon Scheyer won a national championship as a Duke senior in 2010, and he is coaching the Blue Devils in the Final Four next weekend.
The 37-year-old wonders how his life would be different if Butler’s Gordon Hayward made that famous halfcourt shot at the buzzer in Lucas Oil Stadium. Hayward’s shot bounced off the backboard and rim as Duke won 61-59.
The halfcourt shot was something I’ll never forget,” Scheyer said Monday on the “Dan Patrick Show.” “Thank God he missed it.”
“I don’t know if I’m the head coach at Duke,” he added. “I think my whole life would be different. I think there’s a whole lot of things that could be different because of that shot.”
Scheyer recalled defending Hayward on the play before that, when Hayward narrowly missed a 15-footer from the right baseline.
“I thought it was going in. If it’s an inch shorter, it’s going in,” Scheyer said. “That shot, to me, was the one that scared me.”
After a short pro basketball career, Scheyer joined the Duke coaching staff in 2014 and succeeded Mike Krzyzewski in 2022. He owns an 89-21 record, and this year’s Blue Devils are 35-3 heading into their game against Houston on Saturday in San Antonio
