Lindsey Vonn has opened up about the frightening injury she sustained in Milan, revealing that doctors initially feared she could lose her leg following a devastating crash.
The American skiing icon explained that the accident occurred at high speed, with the force of impact severely damaging her lower leg. According to Vonn, the trauma was so extensive that surgeons were concerned about blood flow and the risk of complications that could have led to amputation. She described the immediate aftermath as chaotic and painful, recalling how she knew instantly that the injury was far more serious than a routine fall.
Medical examinations later confirmed multiple fractures along with significant soft-tissue damage. Vonn said the break was compounded by ligament disruption and deep lacerations, which increased the risk of infection. Surgeons acted quickly, performing an emergency operation to stabilize the bones with internal fixation hardware while also addressing vascular concerns to restore proper circulation.
“The first priority was saving my leg,” she shared, noting that doctors monitored her closely in the hours following surgery to ensure there were no further complications. She underwent additional procedures to clean the wound and reduce swelling, a critical step in preventing long-term damage.
Despite the severity of the injury, Vonn expressed gratitude for the swift medical response she received in Milan. She acknowledged that the road to recovery will be long and physically demanding, involving months of rehabilitation focused on regaining strength, mobility, and confidence.
While the ordeal was traumatic, Vonn said the experience has given her renewed perspective. Having faced numerous injuries throughout her decorated career, she called this one among the most serious, but emphasized her determination to heal fully and remain resilient through the recovery process.
