Olympic skiing icon Lindsey Vonn provided an encouraging update from her hospital bed Wednesday, announcing that her third surgery to repair a complex tibia fracture in her left leg was a success following her dramatic crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics
In a heartfelt Instagram post shared from her recovery room, the 41-year-old American legend wrote: “I had my 3rd surgery today and it was successful. Success today has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago. I’m making progress and while it is slow, I know I’ll be ok.”
Vonn expressed deep gratitude to her medical team, friends, family, and the global outpouring of support that has sustained her through the ordeal. Accompanying the message was a photo showing her giving a thumbs-up, a symbol of her enduring resilience despite the setback.
The injury occurred during the women’s downhill event on Sunday at the Tofane course in Cortina d’Ampezzo, when Vonn crashed just 13 seconds into her run. The high-speed fall resulted in a complex displaced tibia fracture in her left leg—the same limb that had recently suffered a complete ACL rupture just days before the Olympics. She was airlifted to Ca’ Foncello Hospital in Treviso, Italy, where initial stabilization surgery took place, followed by additional procedures to address the intricate damage.
Vonn had already undergone emergency intervention on the day of the crash, with subsequent operations required due to the fracture’s complexity. Doctors had warned early on that multiple surgeries would be necessary to properly repair and stabilize the bone.
This latest procedure marks another step forward in what promises to be a lengthy rehabilitation process. Vonn’s history of knee issues—including a groundbreaking partial knee replacement in her right knee in 2024—adds layers of complexity, as specialists continue to monitor for any impact on her existing prosthesis from the violent fall.
Despite the challenges, Vonn’s message struck a defiant and optimistic tone, reflecting the same unbreakable spirit that carried her through a storied career featuring one Olympic gold, two bronzes, and numerous World Championship titles. Her fans and the skiing world have rallied around her, with celebrities, fellow athletes, and supporters flooding social media with messages of encouragement.
As Vonn begins the slow but steady road to recovery, her words serve as a powerful reminder of perseverance in the face of adversity. While her competitive future remains uncertain, her determination to fight on continues to inspire millions worldwide
